Product Description
What This Product Does
The 9 7/8" (250.8mm) IADC 537 tricone bit occupies the most commonly drilled hole size in oil and gas operations worldwide. It crushes medium-hard formations using three tungsten carbide insert (TCI) cone assemblies and drills 9 7/8" boreholes that serve as intermediate sections below 13 3/8" casing or as production hole sections in medium-depth wells. The 9 7/8" size balances cutter coverage and circulation efficiency, making it versatile across a wide range of formation types and drilling parameters.

Key Features & Technical Specifications
Diameter: 9 7/8" (250.8mm). IADC: 537. Cone seal: elastomer face seal with grease reservoir.
Bearing: roller-ball-friction sealed journal.
Insert configuration: hemispherical TCI on gauge and heel rows, ogival (pointed) on inner rows for faster penetration in softer intervals.
Nozzles: 3 x replaceable, 11-14mm.
Connection: API 6 5/8" REG.
Performance Advantages
In shale-limestone sequences at 100-150 MPa, the 9 7/8" IADC 537 achieves 4-9 m/hr at 50-70 RPM with 80-140 kN WOB. The ogival inner-row inserts provide aggressive cutting in softer shale interbeds, while hemispherical heel inserts protect the cone structure in harder limestone bands. This dual insert strategy delivers consistent ROP across variable formations without the need for bit changes. Bearing life reaches 100-160 hours in clean mud systems. The 9 7/8" hole size accommodates standard 7" production casing with adequate annular clearance for cementing.
Application Scenarios
Intermediate sections in onshore oil and gas wells (most common application globally). Horizontal well curve sections where tricone bits provide smoother build rates than PDC in hard formations. Large-diameter water-well drilling for municipal supply and irrigation. Mining and geothermal exploration where 9 7/8" is the standard borehole size. Widely used in North America, Middle East, and South American drilling markets.
Technical Support & Customization
SUNGOOD offers insert grade matching by formation type — standard YG8C for soft-medium rock to YG11C for highly abrasive intervals. Nozzle optimization based on pump capacity and hydraulics. Seal upgrades to high-temperature formulations for geothermal applications exceeding 120°C. Shirttail hardfacing options for abrasive formations. Standard configurations ship within 5-7 working days.
